METACITIES at the CIVITAS Forum 2026
On 14 September 2026, the METACITIES project was presented during the Greek Cities Day for Sustainable Mobility, held at Thessaloniki City Hall in the framework of CIVITAS Forum 2026, through the participation of project partner Road Safety Institute (R.S.I.) “Panos Mylonas”.
The event brought together Local Authorities and civil society organisations to exchange good practices and current approaches in the fields of Sustainable Mobility, Accessibility and Road Safety.
During a round-table discussion, a representative of R.S.I. “Panos Mylonas” highlighted the close connection between sustainable mobility and road safety, emphasising the importance of a human-centred approach to urban planning. The discussion addressed topics such as safe mobility around schools, speed and parking management, lower speed limits in areas shared with vulnerable road users, accessibility, and the development of safer and more attractive alternatives to private car use.
In this context, METACITIES was presented as an example of how Road Safety expertise can be combined with emerging digital technologies. Through the project, tools and approaches such as Digital Twins, Smart Mobility and data-driven urban planning are explored to support the testing and assessment of urban interventions in digital environments before their implementation in real cities.
The participation provided a valuable opportunity to promote the METACITIES vision and demonstrate how technology, data and human-centred urban planning can work together to support safer, smarter and more sustainable cities.
