The 90th Session of the Global Forum for Road Traffic Safety took place at the Palais des Nations, bringing together experts to discuss challenges, measures, and opportunities for improving road safety.

As part of the UNECE panel on Road Safety in Urban Areas, METACITIES consortium member Vassiliki Danelli-Mylonas, from the Road Safety Institute (RSI) Panos Mylonas, contributed to discussions on enhancing the safety of cycling, walking, and public transportation for all road users. The session underscored the urgent need for both immediate and long-term strategies, particularly in lower-middle-income (LMI) countries.

During the panel, Vasiliki highlighted key ongoing efforts in Greece, including:
✅ The implementation of low-cost road safety measures
✅ The upcoming revision of the Road Code, set to be voted on in the Hellenic Parliament
✅ The renewal of the public transport fleet to reduce reliance on private vehicles

Additionally, she presented the METACITIES Excellence Hub in South-Eastern Europe, where RSI (Road Safety Institute) represents Civil Society under the Quadruple Helix framework. She elaborated on the potential of Digital Twins and Metaverse technologies in creating intelligent, interconnected urban spaces that enhance safety, mobility, and sustainability.
