Patras Mobility Digital Twin: Advancing Urban Intelligence through Data-Driven Mobility Solutions

As part of the Metacities Excellence Hub project, the Greek Cluster has developed a pilot demonstration of the Patras Mobility Digital Twin in the city of Patras, Greece, bringing together innovative digital technologies to support smarter and more sustainable urban mobility.

The platform is built on an advanced, dynamic data-fusion environment that combines a 3D representation of the city with real-time data from multiple sources, including public transport operations, parking sensors, traffic flow information, and other urban infrastructure systems, following the principles of the Open Digital Twin Framework (ODTF). Building on this foundation, the platform integrates traffic simulation capabilities, laying the groundwork for its future evolution into a fully operational, large-scale Urban Digital Twin.

By enabling the simulation and assessment of potential road network interventions and mobility policies before their implementation, the system provides public authorities and urban planners with valuable insights to reduce uncertainty, improve decision-making, and design more effective mobility strategies. It also creates opportunities for stakeholders to actively participate in shaping the future of urban mobility.

Throughout the project, the Greek Cluster has worked closely with stakeholders across the Quadruple Helix ecosystem – including public authorities, industry, academia, and civil society – to co-design priorities, identify real-world challenges, and develop proof-of-concept scenarios addressing actual urban needs.

Designed with scalability at its core, the platform can gradually expand beyond mobility applications to support additional policy domains, including culture, tourism, major event management, and civil protection, powered by predictive analytics and advanced decision-support capabilities.

The long-term vision is to establish a unified Urban Intelligence Platform that supports the planning, operation, and resilience of cities and regions, enabling more informed decisions and contributing to the development of smarter, more sustainable urban environments.
