UPAT Hosts 2-Day IoT Hackathon: Shaping Future IoT Engineers

The University of Patras (UPAT), through its Department of Electrical Engineering & Computer Technology, recently organized a dynamic two-day IoT Hackathon. With a focus on fostering innovation and skill development among students, the event attracted 30 enthusiastic participants eager to delve into the realm of Internet of Things (IoT) technology.

The hackathon, held on the 29th and 30th of May 2023, offered a comprehensive program aimed at equipping students with the knowledge and practical experience essential for thriving in the rapidly evolving field of IoT engineering.

The event commenced with an introductory speech highlighting the pivotal role of an “IoT Engineer” in shaping the future of technology. This set the stage for an engaging workshop where participants delved into various facets of IoT technology. Led by industry experts, the workshop covered essential topics including cloud engineering, data ingestion, standardization, exposure, as well as relevant protocols such as MQTT, LoRa, and more. The workshop’s focus on edge AI and the journey of IoT data from production to consumption provided participants with valuable insights and hands-on experience with cutting-edge technologies.

The highlight of the hackathon was the challenge presented to participants: to conceptualize and design an IoT project centered around the concept of smart cities. This task not only encouraged creativity but also pushed participants to think critically about the practical applications of IoT technology in addressing real-world challenges faced by urban environments.
